About MATH 3551 A
Basic theory of groups, rings, fields, homomorphisms, and isomorphisms. Prerequisites: MATH 2468 or MATH 2551 or C- or better in MATH 2055; MATH 2522 or MATH 2544.
Notes
Prereqs enforced by the system: (MATH 2055 or 2468 or 2551) and (MATH 2522 or 2544); Open to Degree and PACE students
Section Description
The purpose of this course is to introduce the theory of abstract algebra, and in particular, group theory. A group is a fundamental mathematical structure that arises in almost every area of mathematics, and has many applications in other sciences. This is a theory-heavy course, and students will become strong at proof-writing. Textbook: Dummit and Foote, Abstract Algebra, 3rd Edition.
Section Expectation
At the end of this course students should: - Be familiar with the structure of well-known small groups, such as the cyclic groups, dihedral groups, quaternion group and symmetric groups. - Understand the theory surrounding topics such as group homomorphisms, quotient groups, group products and group actions. - Write rigorous mathematical proofs on these topics.
Evaluation
