Section Description
This course introduces students to numerical analysis through exposure to the algorithms of scientific computation. The tools of linear algebra and calculus behave differently on computers than on paper, owing to finite precision and truncated limits. Topics include methods for analyzing algorithmic complexity and error propagation, machine precision, root finding, fitting models to data through interpolation and least squares, numerical linear algebra, singular value decomposition, finite difference approximations, and numerical integration of differential equations. All material is motivated through applications found in science, engineering, physics, and complex systems.
Section Expectation
The course is mainly lecture based, with interaction taking place outside of the class through a course twitter account and weekly HW help sessions during office hours. The course requires some experience with programming and a pre-requisite of Linear Algebra.
Evaluation
Weekly assignments (11 total) consist of 8 questions each. There will be a three in-class exams during the semester and no final exam. Performance on HW and Exams are weighted equally.
