Course Description
This is the 6th year of an ongoing course that has developed a deep relationship amongst instructors, Bahamian South Andros community members and leaders, and even past students. Our work centers around growing the Ecological Agriculture Campus at South Andros High School and the homestead farm at “Holyland” . We have co-planned and built hydroponic aquaponic systems, shade systems, raised beds, irrigation system, greens wash/pack station, walk-in cooler, chicken house, egg hatchery, and beehives. This year we will work alongside high school students and teachers to complete two or more design/build projects, that will contribute to hurricane recovery and island resilience.
While working, we stay engaged with the course’s central questions: What are we doing here and is it actually beneficial for all involved? What are the impacts of my/our actions in this relationship? These questions will be examined thoroughly through personal introspection, group discussion, and through a framework of solidarity work (not charity).
Are YOU ready to enter a rich and on-going relationship? …To work hard in the Bahamian sun on great ecological design projects? …To meet amazing people and classmates? … To question the very presence of the course, the validity of our actions, and even your decision to be at university? To snorkel on a coral reef, jump into blue holes, eat fresh conch, catch your own conch, free dive, and enjoy a remote Bahamian beach?
