About ASCI 3600 B

An exploration of modern zoo philosophy and ethics and the extent of human intervention necessary for the preservation of endangered species. Prerequisites: ASCI 2600 and Instructor permission.

Section Description

This course will an in-depth exploration of topics covered in ASCI 2600, including welfare, conservation, education, visitor effects and environmental enrichment. In the broader context, we will consider some major environmental threats faced by endangered animal species. There will be an emphasis on zoo animal management, and we will investigate certain species in-depth. Additionally, we will investigate current zoo issues so that students will develop a deep understanding of the zoo world. We will read and discuss a different scientific paper each week. Each lecture will be discussion based, with a learning activity. We will have several guest speakers.

Section Expectation

Students are expected to attend all lectures. Students should expect to spend 6-8 hours a week on coursework outside of class, with additional time for the semester-long project. There is a COURSE FEE attached to this course and a MANDATORY field trip to Boston date TBC (but likely Nov. 1).

Evaluation

Evaluations will consist of class participation, a project, a debate and 1-2 exams.
