About CDAE 2210 OL1

Students learn to report and write news for print, online, and broadcast formats through practical application of media literacy skills and study of current events. Prerequisite: ENGL 1001 or ENGL 1740.

Section Description

This class focuses on building news writing skills across different media, from print newspapers and digital platforms to social media and podcasts. With an emphasis on the fundamentals of journalistic reporting, students will work on a variety of news writing projects covering topics of their choice. Core skills covered in class include how to develop great story ideas, conduct interviews, and research, organize, and write compelling news stories. The class also focuses on how journalism in the public interest can support the growth of democratic, sustainable, and resilient communities. Through a mixture of hands-on writing assignments and analysis of current headlines, the class prepares students with skills that are critical in today’s newsrooms and a variety of communication careers.

Section Expectation

This asynchronous online course includes regular online presentations, readings and assignments, as well as discussion forum assignments outlined in weekly modules. Students can expect to spend 1-2 hours a week on coursework outside of class.

Evaluation

Evaluation is based on class attendance and participation (regularly logging in and reviewing all the materials in each module), and completion of weekly writing, reading, and reflection assignments.
