Section Description
This Forage Crops and Pasture Management course will cover the scientific principles and practical applications of producing, managing, conserving, and utilizing perennial and annual forage crops by ruminant and equine livestock. Students will learn to identify the main forages growing in Vermont and how to plan the grazing season and extend beyond September, among other learning objectives.
Vermont is a perfect place to raise livestock on pasture because of its climate, which produces an adequate amount of precipitation, helping to support high-quality, perennial forage production. Raising livestock outside is the least expensive method of producing nutrient-dense animal products when we rely on properly managed rotational grazing. Pasture-based farming is also healthy, and it can protect the environment, providing erosion control, nutrient cycling, carbon sequestration, enhanced water quality, and minimizing nutrient runoff and soil sediments.
Section Expectation
The class will meet M, W, and F starting at 1:10 pm. Lab / field trips is 4:30 hours starting at 1:10 pm. Students are expected to attend all classes and field trips, participate in class discussions, and engage in their individual and group activities.
Evaluation
Students will be evaluated through various assignments: readings, "hands-on" activities such as preparing a forage ID, learning field methods sampling, problem-solving quizzes and exercises, an exam, and a final project.
