About NR 2100 A

Focuses on the types of oral communication common in environmental professions, with a focus on an environmental issue that students adapt communications for throughout the semester. Designed to teach students common frameworks for effective science communication and stakeholder engagement, while providing opportunities for students to expand their oral communication, critical analysis and listening skills for a variety of audiences and purposes.

Section Description

This one-credit class is designed to help you explore the environmental sciences discipline and profession and plan how pursuing an ENSC major at UVM can prepare your for a career working to solve environmental problems. You will also learn and practice common skills and frameworks essential to a successful career as an environmental professional.

Section Expectation

This course is structured as weekly Modules focused on planning for your next 4 years as and Environmental Science major at UVM and practicing critical professional skills that will help prepare you to succeed in your courses and career.

Each module will follow the same structure:
Class Time: In class Lecture and Discussion to introduce you to the concepts and skills you will be practicing and why it is important to master as an environmental professional.

Online Exploration: In addition to lecture, each module includes online materials. This independent online work that should take you about an hour to complete and will ensure that you are ready to tackle the module assignment.

Module Assignment: Once you have worked through the materials, you are ready to work on your assignment. For the Learning Outcomes modules this will be a short assessment quiz where you can demonstrate your proficiency in the target skills. Assignments for our required modules will differ depending on our focus. Plan that each assignment should take you 1-2 hours to complete.

Evaluation

Assignment averages from the modules are averaged to determine the final grade.
