Introduces students to the practice and profession of landscape design. Through a series of studio exercises, field trips, and a real-world final design project, explores the landscape design process from site inventories and analyses to conceptual plans and schematic planning, as well as other supporting design deliverables. Prerequisites: ALE 2370, ALE 2560, ARTS 1010, or CDAE 1160; minimum Sophomore standing; or instructor permission. Pre/Co-requisite: ALE 2370. Cross-listed with: CDAE 2371.

Pre/Co-requisites: PSS/ALE 2370. Prereqs enforced by the system: PSS/ALE 2370, PSS/ALE 2560,ARTS 1010, or CDAE 1160; Min sophomore standing. ALE 2370 may be taken concurrently, but students will need to request an override.

Section Description

Landscape Design is a studio course that introduces students to the principles of landscape design. Through discussions, field trips, studio exercises/critiques, and real-world design projects, students will be introduced to a fundamental design vocabulary, the design process, and graphic communication strategies.

Students will:
1.Understand that landscape design/landscape architecture is an art based upon science, specifically the science of ecology
3.Recognize the way landscape designers use core elements such as topography, plants, and circulation to create designs
4.Learn to use effective graphic communication to represent their design thinking
5.Develop an understanding that design is an iterative process, requiring patience, time, and critical thinking

Section Expectation

Students are expected to attend class for all designated periods and participate in studio activities and critiques. This courses focuses on the fundamentals of hand drawing and drafting. Students are required to purchase basic drafting supplies, including tracing paper, drawing pens/pencils, drafting tape, triangle and circle templates, and an engineer’s scale. All students must have at least one landscape graphics book for reference. Students will also be asked to buy and use a sketchbook to share their work and responses to specific sketchbook prompts. This class will also involve iterative design work including smaller presentations of draft landscape designs during “desk critiques” as well as larger formal presentations as final “reviews” of designs. In a typical semester, students work on two different studio projects. Some assignments will be completed in small groups, but the majority of assignments are individual.
