Section Description

Public Health is a dynamic and exciting field of study encompassing a wide range of disciplines and perspectives. This course is an introductory investigation of public health exposing students to the history and main principles and practices of public health and its societal and population significance. Throughout the semester, students will consider the basic elements that determine the health of populations and be challenged to question their views of health and what produces health in the US. Emphasis will be on the functions of public health, specific health issues that impact the health of the population and a comprehensive overview and examination of the social determinants of health and health equity.

Section Expectation

This class is designed to be active, and to engage you as primary participants and leaders in your learning process. Rather than your instructor lecturing “at” you, throughout the semester, we will work together as much as possible to teach and learn from each other. We will also employ strategies that support equity - such as random call – as a way to include everyone’s voices in discussions.
