About CHEM 1450 Z1
Second semester of a two-semester sequence. Topics include solutions, kinetics, equilibrium, acid-base chemistry, aqueous ionic equilibria, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, and nuclear chemistry. Credit not awarded for both CHEM 1450 and CHEM 1455. Prerequisite: CHEM 1400 or CHEM 1405.

Section Description
The class is split into two parts, a lecture portion and a lab portion. The lecture section is asynchronous and utilizes the Brightspace platform to present chalk-talk lectures containing multimedia, models, and demonstrations along with extra problem solving videos for understanding of key conceptual and mathematical processes. Students strengthen what is learned by applying it to homework assignments. The lab is synchronous and each section holds approximately 22 students. This is the experiential portion of the course and allows for the student to physically conduct experiments within and make connections to key topics presented in lectures.
Section Expectation
Key topics discussed in CHEM1450 include, but are not limited to, Chemical Reaction Kinetics, Chemical Equilibria, Acid-Base and Buffer Equilibria, Solubility Equilibria, Gibbs Free Energy and Thermochemistry, Electrochemistry, and Nuclear Chemistry.
Evaluation
The lecture section of the course is evaluated with three mid-semester exams and one cumulative final exam. Each mid-semster exam counts for 175 points each. The cumulative final exam counts for 225 points, for a total of 750 points from the lecture portion of the course. The student is allowed to replace their lowest mid-semester exam with their cumulative final exam grade only if their final exam grade is higher than their lowest mid-semester exam grade. The lab section of the course is evaluated with weekly attendance, pre-lab report, pre-lab quiz, and full lab report for a total of 250 points. The grade in the class is the sum of both the lecture and lab points out of a total of 1000 possible points.
