Section Description
This course introduces students to the 2nd fundamentals of American Sign Language, and enhances the skills learned in Level 1 (ASL 1 or 1100). This course focuses on expanding conversational abilities and receptive and expressive skills through a visual-gestural modality. Discusses concepts and principles: advanced vocabulary, grammar patterns, use of space/modulation of signs for time/location. Further explores Deaf Culture. Prerequisites: ASL 1100 or equivalent knowledge. Course Outlines - Unit 4: Residences and Communities. Unit 5: Scheduling. Unit 6: Good Times.
Section Expectation
Need to pay $45 for TWA (True Way ASL) curriculum via Brightspace. Complete units 4-6, enhance conversational skills in ASL. This course is online synchronous. Your instructor will actively engage on a daily basis for check-ins, communication, and feedback. Students can expect a structured learning environment with specific due dates for assignments and activities. While students will work independently, regular participation in discussions and timely completion of tasks are essential. Engaging with assigned video lectures and submitting videos for feedback will help reinforce skills. Consistent participation and meeting the deadlines are crucial to learning ASL and Deaf culture.
Evaluation
Course Letter Grading: Tests, quizzes, assignments, participation. Instructor will use ASL rubric to assess ASL skills via videos. Students will be evaluated based on a variety of weighted categories, which include worksheets, video assignments, lab activities, unit tests, and cultural discussions. Each category will be assessed using specific rubrics that outline expectations for performance, ensuring transparent and consistent grading throughout the course.
