Section Description
This event planning course focuses on providing students the basic knowledge and skills of event planning for athletics through the lens of collegiate level sport. Sponsorship, fundraising, marketing, promotions, licensing/branding, ticket operations, social media, event operations, and risk management that support event production are some areas this course will cover. Through presentations, guest speaker videos, readings, class discussions and writing assignments, students will gain a thorough understanding of the event planning process. Throughout your experience this semester, always ask yourself – How does this relate to athletic event planning? What would I do as an event planner?
Section Expectation
Learning Objectives: • Students will acquire a basic knowledge of event planning, fundraising, sponsorship, marketing, promotions, licensing/branding, staffing, ticket operations and event management. • Students will apply and share their skills and experiences throughout the event planning process. • To gain communication skills and networking abilities. • To experience professional growth through the process.
Evaluation
Coursework: There will be three forms of work required: discussion posts, writing assignments, and a final assignment. Discussion postings: Throughout the course there will be questions posted on Brightspace. Students are divided into 3 teams to better engage with a smaller cohort than if we were to hold a discussion with all enrolled. Students will be required to submit their initial post by Tuesday at 12noon and subsequent posts to their teammates by Thursday at 11:59pm. The module will then close for that week’s topic. Commenting on classmates’ posts and responding to questions are an important part of your discussion and participation grades. For full credit, you will need to post a minimum of 3 times per discussion, in addition to your initial submission. These posts should be about quality, not quantity. With that said, I expect thoughtful, in-depth responses to classmate’s contributions to the discussion; not just a line or two. For a sample of a full credit discussion post, please visit course materials on BrightSpace. Word count for initial post: 250min – 500 max. Blog Writing assignments: There will be online exercises or self-evaluative activities posted on Brightspace. Each assignment will be clearly outlined with specific due dates and the point values in the module. These are minimum 1-page, maximum 2-page assignments to be post under course tools > assignments. These will be due on Thursday at 11:59pm. There will be a 5-point deduction for each day the assignment is past due. You do not have to comment on your classmates’ blogs. It is always suggested that some form of module content is referenced in your writing assignments. For a sample of a full credit blog entry please visit course materials on Brightspace. Word count: 400min – 600 max. Final Assignment: More details to follow but your will have a choice between a paper or exam.
