Section Description

CHEM 1100 is an exploration of the central concepts of General Chemistry. A one-semester, 4-credit survey course involving both a lecture and a laboratory component, CHEM 1100 touches on all of the topics normally covered in two-semester General Chemistry courses (such as CHEM 031/032). The course is able to compact these concepts into a smaller time package by limiting the depth of immersion in each area. Topics covered in CHEM 1100 include Measurement & Problem Solving, Matter & Energy, Atomic Elements & Electron Structure, Chemical Bonding in Molecules & Compounds, Chemical Composition & Reaction Balancing, Molar Quantities and Solution Concentration, Behavior of Gases, Intermolecular Forces, Acids/Bases, & Chemical Equilibrium. Students should have a general understanding of these topics and their interrelatedness by the end of the course.

Section Expectation

This course combines a lecture format worth 80% and a lab component worth 20% of the total. In addition to attending lecture, students should expect to spend 3-4 hours per week in consistent study and problem-solving. Solving recommended problems is the best way to do this.

Evaluation

Students will be evaluated with three mid-term exams, a final exam, and an online (BlackBoard) quiz average, as well as a lab component of the course.
