Survey of hearing and the nature and causes of hearing impairment. Includes an orientation to assessment procedures and rationales, hearing screening and counseling considerations. Prerequisites: CSD 101, CSD 199.

Section Description
This course will introduce the student to the profession of audiology, the nature of hearing and hearing disorders, and diagnostic procedures to assess the auditory system. Theoretical information and practical opportunities necessary to develop a working understanding of audiological assessment will be provided.
Section Expectation
Students will obtain course knowledge through asynchronous viewing of video lectures, required readings, non-graded practice, and graded assignments. Per University policy regarding work required for a three credit hour course, students should expect to spend approximately three to four hours per day (including weekends) on this course given its intensive nature over the four week period. Upon successful completion of this course, all students will be able to: 1. Describe the acoustics of sound and its properties 2. Explain the function of the auditory system including its individual components 3. Describe the use of an audiometer and the standard behavioral and objective test procedures 4. Interpret audiometric data and formulate diagnoses 5. Describe a case history, summarize information in a report format, and make appropriate referrals 6. Identify various disorders of the auditory system 7. Describe and plan a hearing screening program
