Introduction to calculus of functions of one variable including: limits, continuity, techniques and applications of differentiation and integration. Prerequisites: MATH 010. Credit not given for more than one course in the pair MATH 019, MATH 021 unless followed by MATH 022 or MATH 023.

MATH 021 (Calculus 1) is an introduction to the calculus of functions of one variable. This will include an understanding of the concepts of limits, continuity, the definition of the derivative, and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus; techniques and applications of differentiation;basic integration,including integration by substitution; and applications of integration including area and volume. Topics will be presented with a level of depth and rigor appropriate for students pursuing degrees in technical fields such as mathematics, statistics, engineering, or the physical sciences. The computer algebra system Mathematica will be used throughout the course. Prerequisite: MATH 010 or a score of 12 or higher on the Math Readiness Test Required Course Materials Access Code for WebAssign Online Homework and eBook Software The Mathematica software used in the course is provided by UVM; you do not need to purchase it. You may install Mathematica on your own computer free of charge under UVM’s site license. Mathematica is also available for use in various computer labs on campus.
Expect to spend around 8 hours per week outside of class.
Evaluation based on homework (2-3 assignments per week), Mathematica labs, journal, weekly quizzes, tests, and final exam.
