Exploring biology from cells to organisms. Topics include origins of life, ancestral organisms, uni- and multi- cellular energetics, evolution of respiration and metabolism, and the genetic code. Credit not given for both BCOR 011 and BIOL 001.

Section Description
BCOR 11, Exploring Biology, is the first semester introductory biology course for life science majors, focusing on cell biology, genetics, and physiology. It will cover topics in basic biochemistry, cell structure, photosynthesis and respiration, DNA structure and function, plant physiology, and animal physiology.
Section Expectation
This course combines lectures in a small-capacity classroom, and weekly laboratory exercises involving group and individual work. Students should expect to spend 2-4 hours per week on coursework outside of class, with additional time for exam preparation.
Evaluation
There are typically: four mid-term exams and one final exam, weekly homework, in-class participation, and laboratory assignments. The laboratory component counts for about a quarter of the total points and you must pass both lecture and lab to pass the course.
