Section Description

This course will provide students an introduction to the design program SketchUp. Students will learn the array of features in SketchUp's toolbox and will be able to draft structures by the end of the course. Weekly design assignments will be assigned as well as a final project combining the practices and tools taught throughout the semester. 3D modeling and applied design will also be introduced. This course will teach basic methods, principles, and conventions of architectural, three-view, oblique, isometric, and perspective drafting in SketchUp Students will utilize computer software to render and learn procedures for efficient and effective 3D modeling of buildings, shapes, and physical spaces. This course will be delivered in an applied lecture setting wherein the instructor will provide guidelines and examples of software procedures to the students who will then have the opportunity to repeat and build upon the procedures presented. Students should plan to spend 3-6 hours, on average, per week on work outside of class creating models in SketchUp.

Section Expectation

Showing up is integral; this course will be most effective with the student behind the computer while the instructor teaches through the skills and tools.


Attendance: 10% Assignments 1-15: 75% Final project: 15% Each weekly assignment throughout the semester will be graded on a 5-point scale. Grading of your modeled submissions will consider the completeness of design: removing errant lines, shapes, faces, making sure all faces are correctly scaled and matched, all faces having complete coverage, etc. Students have two weeks from the date their grade is posted on Blackboard to appeal a grade to the instructors.
