About ASL 001 OL1
Introduction of American Sign Language with emphasis on visual receptive and expressive use including facial expressions and gestures. Elements of the Deaf Culture are explored.

Section Description
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of American Sign Language, focuses on building receptive and expressive skills through a visual-gestural modality, and provides an overview of Deaf culture. Student Learning Outcome (SLO): At the conclusion of this course, successful students will be able to: 1. Apply accurate production, grammar, and structural rules in sentences. 2. Demonstrate comprehension and production skills in order to participate in basic conversations. 3. Perform language and social behaviors that are acceptable within the United States deaf communities. 4. Examine, compare, and contrast diverse Deaf cultures with their own cultures. 5. Produce and document emerging language skills using digital media and tools. Delivery Format: This class is an asynchronous, paced online course. Students work on their own time but with scheduled due dates to complete lessons. Each lesson includes an ASL professor's digital lecture, videos, activity, assignments, and lab. Students will also participate in cultural-related discussions.

Evaluation
Grades are based on participation, workbooks, video assignments, ASL conversations, and quizzes.
