Section Description

Course Description & Overall Goal: The course aims to provide an understanding of the basic principles of fluid mechanics and applications to civil and environmental engineering problems. It is the first of the fundamental courses in “water” engineering here at UVM, and forms the basis for subsequent courses such as Hydrology, Groundwater, and Applied River or Water Resources Engineering courses. You will be introduced to the mechanics of incompressible fluids – fluid statics and fluid flow. In particular, you will develop the skills needed for the design and analysis of hydraulic structures in civil, and environmental engineering, including flow in closed conduits, open channels, and elements of hydraulic machinery. Course Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, you should be able to: 1) Demonstrate understanding of the basic principles of fluid mechanics including fluid statics and fluid flow, 2) Explain how we define a fluid (i.e., what can be considered a fluid), 3) Describe the fluid properties and use them to solve the assigned problems, and 4) Apply analytical methods to the solution of typical hydraulic engineering problems such as flow in pipes and open channels, and elements of hydraulic machinery.

Text: Finnemore & Franzini, Fluid Mechanics with Engineering Applications, 10th Ed, McGraw Hill, 2002 ISBN: 007112196X, 9780071121965 Students should expect to spend 6-8 hours a week on coursework outside of class, with additional time for the semester-long project. The syllabus, weekly homework solutions, and examples of 2020 exams/tests will also be provided on Bb (see https://bb.uvm.edu). Attempt homework problems without looking at the solutions using the engineering format you learned in statics, that is – summarize: 1) the problem, 2) the given parameters and constraints, and 3) your attempt and final solution). Please show your attempt in pencil; and when you get stuck or need a hint, look at the solution and write/correct anything in pen. The homework will be graded; however, it is your responsibility to ensure solutions are correct. So, look at the solutions and re-solve the problem as needed. Grading will be weighted toward learning investment. Homework assignments must be submitted electronically as a single PDF file using the correct Bb assignment link prior to the start of class on the due date listed.


Grade Distribution: • Homework Assignments (equally weighted) = 15% • Semester Project & Class participation = 15% • 1 Test (6%) and 3 Exams (18% each) = 60% • Comprehensive (Optional) Final Exam = 10%
