Foundational concepts of numerical integration, numerical differentiation, and numerical approximation and solution of differential and partial differential equations of the type encountered in the analysis of engineering problems and data processing; project-based. Prerequisites: MATH 271, CS 020; MATH 122 or MATH 124. Cross-listed with: ME 218.

Section Description

The course provides the student with a comprehensive knowledge of numerical methods for solving differential and partial-differential equations such as encountered in science and engineering. The course considers basic theory required to understand the various numerical methods, a description of the methods and instruction on how to create a computer code that employs the methods in a `real-world’ application. Successful completion of the application requires the student to program the methodology in any computer programming language of the student’s choice.

Section Expectation

1. Master the underlying theory that forms the foundation of the presented numerical methods 2. Be capable of creating a computer program using these methods in up to two space dimensions. 3. Be capable of using such a program in a practical engineering application.


Grading is based upon three criteria; 1. Examinations conducted throughout the duration of the course, 2. Class participationand 3. Homework and a final project.
