The basis of inheritance, covering topics from classical genetics to modern molecular studies. Analysis of genetic data emphasized, from prokaryotic, animal, and plant systems. Prerequisites: [(BCOR 011 or BIOL 001) and (BCOR 012 or BIOL 002)], or BCOR 021; and also CHEM 031, or CHEM 035, or CHEM 051.
Prereqs enforced by the system: BCOR 011/012 or BIOL 001/002 or BCOR 021; and CHEM 031 or CHEM 035 or CHEM 051. Must register for a BCOR 101 discussion. Continuing Education students only; Degree students register for BCOR 101 A.
The goals of this course are to develop a deep understanding of the major concepts in genetics, learn how to apply these concepts to solve problems, and to develop a capacity to think critically about real-world issues related to genetics. The course covers topics from classical genetics to modern molecular studies. Analysis of genetic data is emphasized, from prokaryotic, animal, and plant systems.
This course combines lectures in a large-capacity lecture hall, and weekly discussion sections involving group and individual work. Students should expect to spend 2-4 hours per week on coursework outside of class, with additional time for exam preparation.
Three midterm exams and one final exam, weekly homework and recitation section assignments, as well as in-class iClicker activities.
