Introduction to Museum Studies This course introduces students to the history, theory, practice, and diversity of museums including the museum’s evolving role in society. We will examine how museums shape meaning through curatorial practice and collections, digital technology, exhibition design, and architecture. We will explore the basic structure and organization of the museum while learning about various career paths in the field. Framed within a national and global perspective, we will investigate some of the critical issues underlying today’s museums including colonialization, cultural patrimony, inclusivity and representation, and the changing relationship between museum, visitor, and community.

Section Expectations: Our class will include lectures, readings, discussion, virtual and in-person museum visits, group projects and presentations, and individual projects. It is required that you attend all scheduled sessions having read the assigned material and be prepared to participate in discussions.

Evaluation: There will be a variety of means for evaluation including some written assignments, quizzes, group projects, mid-term examination, and final individual project.
