A survey of dance history in Western civilization from the Renaissance to the present. Emphasis on the dance idioms of ballet and modern dance.

Section Description

This survey course investigates dance legacies and contexts in the Euro-Northern circle. Emphasis on the transformation of dance from the birth of ballet to contemporary dance-making in the twenty-first century.

Section Expectation

Students are expected to complete assigned readings, video observation, performance attendance, and to expand their critical and analytical thinking through written assignments and in-class discussions.


Final Exam: 35% Video Reflection: 30% Discussion Posts: 20% Class Participation: 10% Performance Attendance: 5%
