Comm Sciences & Disorders: Dev of Spoken Language

Speech and language acquisition interpreted in light of current learning and cognitive theory, linguistic theory, and methods of linguistic analysis.

The Development of Spoken Language focuses on the nature of speech and language development from infancy through school years and beyond. We will examine the developmental progression of phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics as well as various theoretical perspectives on communication development. The connections between oral speech, language and literacy development are examined. Overall development and the importance of family and other relationships relating to communication acquisition are emphasized. We will discuss children’s individual differences in acquiring communication, including cultural aspects of first and second language acquisition, and a brief overview of communication disorders. This course is offered as a prerequisite course for students applying to a graduate program in communication science and disorders. Course objective include: 1. defining components of language, 2. Provide examples of typical developmental milestones, 3. Provide examples of differences in language development, 4. Provide examples of developmental language disorders, 5. Compare and contrast theories of language development

This remote course combines lecture and discussion formats. Students should expect to spend 6-8 hours a week on coursework and required readings outside of class, with additional time for unit assignments throughout the semester.
