Chemistry: Outline of Organic & Biochem

Broad overview of most important facts and principles of organic and biochemistry and of interrelationships between these branches of chemistry. NO LABORATORY. May not be taken for credit concurrently with, or following receipt of, credit for CHEM 026, CHEM 042 or CHEM 044. Prerequisite: CHEM 023, CHEM 025, or CHEM 031.

Prereqs enforced by the system: CHEM 23 or 25 or 31; Open to Degree and CDE students; Cross listed with CHEM 026 A.

This is a one-semester survey of organic chemistry and biochemistry, with about equal time spent on the two disciplines. Covered in the organic chemistry portion are organic functional groups, organic reactions, and nomenclature systems based on these functionalities. The biochemistry portion covers essential biological molecular structures and systems such as carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids.

This course combines a lecture format worth 80% and a lab component worth 20% of the total. In addition to attending lecture, students should expect to spend 3-4 hours per week in consistent study and problem-solving. Solving recommended text problems is the best way to do this.

Students will be evaluated with three mid-term exams, a final exam, and an online (BlackBoard) quiz average, as well as a lab component of the course.
