While many students will have read the Harry Potter books before, this course examines the books as literary texts, applying critical reading techniques to one of the world’s most popular children’s series.
The course is primarily discussion-based and requires students to keep up with the reading. Be prepared to read over 4000 pages during the semester, or about 300 pages each week. I strongly encourage you to (re)read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone over the summer, as we’ll be talking about it in the first week. Required materials (any editions are fine): 1. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (JK Rowling, ISBN 978-0439708180) 2. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (JK Rowling, ISBN 978-0439064873) 3. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (JK Rowling, ISBN 978-0439136365) 4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (JK Rowling, ISBN 978-0439139601) 5. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (JK Rowling, ISBN 978-0439358071) 6. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (JK Rowling, ISBN 978-0439785969) 7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (JK Rowling, ISBN 978-0545139700) 8. Harry Potter and Beyond (Tison Pugh, ISBN 978-1643360874)
This class uses Specs Grading. Evaluation is based on reading responses, attendance and discussion participation, a short research project, an argument paper, and a presentation.
