Lab fee $35; Open to Degree and CDE students
"4D: Sound, Video, Performance" will introduce students to the world of four-dimensional art practice, including video art, performance art, and sound art. Students will learn about the histories of these media, and have the opportunity to learn foundational skills such as introductory video editing, use of microphones and audio recording, how to write and enact performance scores, and build comfortability with the use of their own bodies. We will look at how historical artworks have informed contemporary practices and will integrate the language and dialogs of time-based arts into the creative projects produced. Combining theory and practice, students will be required to complete several creative projects over the semester and one group presentation. Through group research, students will become familiar with the practices of contemporary artists working in time-based media, and through group critique we will practice critical analysis. Some of the artists discussed include: Jeremy Deller, Mark Tribe, Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Allan Kaprow, Yoko Ono, Pope L, Laurie Anderson, Sun Ra, Florian Hecker, Janet Cardiff, Adrian Piper, Marina Ambromovic, Theaster Gates, Dani Restack, Sky Hopinka, Abigail Child, Sondra Perry, Ryan Trecartin, Kalup Linzy, Bruce Nauman, Steve McQueen, Valie Export, Peggy Ahwesh, Nam June Paik, Pierre Huyghe, Pipilotti Rist, Harun Farocki and many more. Please note that this is a HYBRID format course, meaning in will be conducted half virtually and half in-person.
