About MATH 022 B

Vectors and vector operations. Techniques and applications of integration. Polar coordinates, Taylor polynomials, sequences and series, power series. Prerequisite: C- or better in MATH 021. Credit will not be given for both MATH 022 and MATH 023.

Prereqs enforced by the system: MATH 021; Open to Degree and CDE students

Section Description

MATH 022 (Calculus 2) is a continuation of the study of the calculus of functions of one variable begun in MATH 021. Topics will include techniques of integration, including integration by parts, trigonometric substitution, and partial fractions; applications of integration, including arc length and surface area; parametric equations and polar coordinates; sequences and series, including analytic tests for convergence; Taylor series; and an introduction to vectors in two and three dimensions. Topics will be presented with a level of depth and rigor appropriate for students pursuing degrees in technical fields such as mathematics, statistics, engineering, or the physical sciences. The computer algebra system Mathematica will be used throughout the course. Prerequisite: C- or better in MATH 021. Students coming from the MATH 019 – 020 sequence without having taken MATH 021 should take MATH 023 instead of MATH 022.

Section Expectation

Access Code for WebAssign Online Homework and eBook: You will need an access code for the eBook and WebAssign online homework for the course. If you took MATH 021 at UVM recently your WebAssign access code should still be active. Otherwise, choose one of the following options. (If you don’t want a printed book, choose Option 1 or 2.) Option 1 WebAssign for Stewart/Clegg/Watson’s Calculus: Early Transcendentals, 9th Edition, Multi-Term Printed Access Card. ISBN 9780357128947 This provides access to the eBook and online homework for all three semesters of calculus (MATH 021, 022 and 121). Option 2 Cengage Unlimited, 1 term (4 months). ISBN 9780357700037 This provides access to the eBook and online homework for all three semesters of calculus, as well as unlimited access to other Cengage textbooks/online homework for one semester. Note: Your access to the calculus eBook and online homework is valid for MATH 021, 022 and 121 even if you only purchase one semester of Cengage Unlimited. Option 3 Stewart/Clegg/Watson’s Calculus: Early Transcendentals, Loose-leaf Version, 9th Edition + WebAssign Multi-Term Printed Access Card. ISBN 9780357466261 This is a loose-leaf copy of the textbook, bundled with an access code for the online homework and eBook good for all three semesters of calculus.
