About MATH 018 A

Data, statistics, modeling, algebra, word problems, calculus. Students who do well in the algebra section may continue with MATH 019 or MATH 021. Prerequisite: three years of high school math. No credit for CEMS students.

Open to Degree and CDE students

Section Description

We will cover logarithms, trigonometry, sequences and series, matrices and systems, word problems, logic, calculus, and statistics. You will also work on a project, with up to two of your classmates. You will practice skills that I present to you. (I hear that practice makes perfect!) I will let you show off how well you learned those skills by giving you quizzes and tests. (I know that you will want to knock my socks off on them!) You will present your project to the class. (You might want to invite guests to see it, too.) We will wrap up with a final! In summary, you will learn math, do math, show off your math skills, and communicate about math! You will also love it all! (That’s the plan!) After completing this course the student will be able to WORK comfortably with logarithms, APPLY rules of trigonometry, USE formulas for sequences and series, OPERATE with matrices and systems of equations, DECIPHER and SOLVE word problems, ORGANIZE logic puzzles to answer questions about them, MANIPULATE functions to calculate and apply derivatives, EVALUATE data, and COMMUNICATE mathematical concepts!

Section Expectation

I expect you to attend and actively participate in class. I expect you to ask questions about the homework and about my presentation of material. I expect you to answer questions posed in class. I expect you to do all homework and submit all assigned work. I expect you to seek help when you need it, either during my office hours or by scheduling a one-on-one session with me.
