Section Description

This is a survey course on traditional Chinese culture with the aim to provide students with the fundamental knowledge needed to understand and to explore Chinese culture further. The course looks into four major areas: 1) Chinese language and dialects, 2) Chinese calligraphy and painting, 3) traditional Chinese schools of thoughts, 3) classical Chinese poetry and novels, and 4) traditional Chinese medicine and healthy living and martial arts.

Section Expectation

Gain basic knowledge in the four major areas of Chinese culture by reading and attending interactive lectures and by raising and discussing questions in and after class. Textbook: China in View: From Tradition to Contemporary (I) by Xiaojun Wang. ISBN: 978-1-62575-257-4

Evaluation

Class attendance, quizzes, and a term paper.
