SPAN 080 is an equivalent course to SPAN 0052, the second course of the intermediate series of Spanish study at UVM that also meets the sustainability general education requirement (SU). The course includes a review of grammar, moving toward increased proficiency in composition, comprehension, pronunciation, speaking, reading, and writing. In order to improve the mastery of Spanish language skills and consolidate knowledge of Spanish grammar, the approach in this class is communicative and devotes about half of the course time to language building, while maintaining a thematic focus on content at all times. Such content is meant to provide students with a foundation on a Global South perspective around the concept and practice of sustainability, while also improving the student's knowledge of the diverse cultures and ideas from the Hispanic world and its diverse people. The course looks at cultural artifacts such as narrative, film and plastic arts in to help students understand sustainability through an environmental humanities lens that is grounded on culture and ethics. This course is taught entirely in Spanish.
The course assumes that students have followed SPAN 001, 002 and 0051 courses at UVM or equivalent. Given the emphasis developing communicative skills, class participation is expected daily. Readings will include a short novel, journalistic articles, some poetry, and topic-specific reports.
Course evaluation includes 2 short essays, 3 exams, oral practice and a creative project.
