First year CSD majors or instructor permission; Not for SLPA's; Open to Degree and CDE students
This course is an introduction to the diverse field of speech-language pathology and audiology, including speech, language and hearing disorders in children and adults. The course differs from many in the major because it focuses on the disorders rather than normal structures and processes. Therefore, it may become closer to what you had in mind when you began thinking about a major in communication disorders. Not every speech and language disorder will be covered, nor will every speech and language assessments and treatment be covered in detail.
This course combines lecture, in-class discussions, hands-on activities, etc. Students should expect to spend 6-8 hours a week on coursework and required readings outside of class, with additional time for semester-long assignment.
Grades are based on participation, weekly assignments, knowledge check quizzes, and a final project.
