A study of Mandarin Chinese designed to give students the fundamentals of the sound and writing systems for developing modern Chinese communicative skills. No prior knowledge expected.

CHIN 001 Elementary Chinese I aims to enable students to begin and/or continue to learn Mandarin Chinese with joy and efficiency. Students (a) learn to speak Chinese through Chinese rhythmic verses composed with daily expressions, (b) learn the Chinese writing system through the pictures that writing symbols developed from, and (c) learn to understand Chinese culture embedded in the Chinese language.
Meet three times a week in class on MWF. Learn and practice listening, speaking, and reading online on Thursday. Do assigned homework regularly. Practice speaking in class and practice writing basic characters after class. Grades are based on attendance, participation, homework, quizzes, and a final exam.
