About GEOL 095 OL1
Week-long on-line, hands-on immersion in Environmental Science and Technology is for all who are passionate about environmental issues and want to investigate the human impact on Vermont's environment. Vermont High School students and Vermont residents who graduated from high school in 2019 and 2020 are eligible to enroll. Students will work locally to learn more about their town’s environment observing and sampling stream water, soil, and ecosystems. Through hands-on exploration and sample collection (with analysis done at UVM after samples are mailed in) students explore how the environment responds to human interactions. Students gain exposure to scientific careers through interaction with faculty, professional guests, evening activities with others, and a virtual career night. Participants will refine presentation skills by creating personal environmental portfolios and working in small groups to create posters that collate and display environmental science results. Students must apply for the Governor's Institute on Environmental Science & Technology at www.giv.org. Acceptance to the Governor's Institute on Environmental Science & Technology is a pre-requisite to taking this class. Everyone can obtain college credit upon completion of the program. Rising high school juniors and seniors can use dual enrollment vouchers to pay for UVM credits (https://education.vermont.gov/student-learning/flexible-pathways/dual-enrollment). We strongly recommend obtaining vouchers before the end of the school year, as HS guidance staff are not typically available during the summer months. Interested students should register for UVM credit as soon as possible and no later than July 1. Call (802) 865-4448 for more information on the Governor's Institutes of Vermont.
