Section Description

This course is designed to introduce students to a number of emerging and contemporary “hot topics” in higher education. Course materials, readings, guest speakers, and vibrant in-class discussion will provide a real-world, practical understanding of current and future challenges faced by institutions of higher education within the United States of America. Course goals and objectives - At the end of this 1 credit class, students should be able to: 1) Identify and describe the major challenges facing institutions of higher education related to budget/finance, affordability, internationalization, technology, and the health and wellbeing of students. 2) Identify and access current, reliable information and articles related to challenges and issues in higher education. 3) Anticipate some of the future challenges facing higher education and begin to understand how these challenges may impact their own career path.

Section Expectation

The 1 credit course meets only 5 times for the semester. This course combines lecture, classroom discussion, and guest speakers to delve into specific challenges in higher education. Students should expect to spend 3-4 hours on coursework outside of classtime for the 5 weeks of the course. All readings will be provided electronically by the faculty at the start of the course.

Evaluation

Grades are based on attendance and participation, an in-class presentation, reflective assignments, and a final project.
