Section Description

EDSP 202 offers conceptual and practical information as well as corresponding skills to facilitate the education of students with severe and/or multiple disabilities in inclusive classrooms. This course follows two interrelated strands. First, student characteristics (a) physical, (b) intellectual, (c) sensory, (d) health, and (e) behavioral characteristics of students with severe and/or multiple disabilities. Second, educational interventions address: (a) inclusive environments, (b) appropriately individualized curriculum (i.e., IEP goals, access to the general education curriculum), (c) purposeful instruction, and (d) necessary supports. The emphasis is on learning practical skills such as collaboration with families and other team members, curriculum planning tools, assessing student needs, related services decision-making processes, adapted instructional planning, effective utilization of paraprofessionals, and assistive technology.

During Spring 2021 the course will meet remotely, synchronously. A required book is: Giangreco, M. F., Cloninger, C. J., & Iverson, V. S. (2011). Choosing outcomes and accommodation for children: A guide to educational planning for students with disabilities (3rd ed.). Baltimore: Paul H. Brookes. https://products.brookespublishing.com/Choosing-Outcomes-and-Accommodations-for-Children-COACH-P463.aspx The online course will combine, lectures, breakout groups, class activities, and guest lecturers. Students have weekly readings (typically 2 or 3 per week).

Evaluation

Attendance and participation are expected. Grading is based on three online quizzes (untimed), one collaborative group assignment, and two individual project assignments. There no timed mid-term exam and no final exam.
