Section Description

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of American Sign Language, focuses on building receptive and expressive skills through a visual-gestural modality, and provides an overview of Deaf culture. Student Learning Outcome (SLO): At the conclusion of this course, successful students will be able to: 1. Apply accurate production, grammar, and structural rules in sentences. 2. Demonstrate comprehension and production skills in order to participate in basic conversations. 3. Perform language and social behaviors that are acceptable within United States deaf communities. 4. Examine, compare, and contrast diverse Deaf culture with their own cultures. 5. Produce and document emerging language skills using digital media and tools.

Required Materials for this course are: 1. TRUE+WAY ASL: Level 1 Student e-Workbook Course Requirements You will be using: • Internet connection • Webcam with your electronic device to do video assignments, for virtual meetings with TA and/or your instructor. • TRUE+WAY ASL (LMS platform) to complete your coursework. • Flipgrid to create video responses. • Virtual meeting platform for scheduled meeting time and office hours.

Evaluation

Grades are based on participation, e-workbooks, video assignments, ASL conversations, and quizzes.
