Current research in multicultural education and literacy informs examination of representation and perspective in literature for children and youth. Perspectives include religion, race, gender, SES.

Through this course, you will further develop your understanding of the role that children’s literature can play in education for diversity and social justice. We will read widely from authors of high-quality multicultural literature, evaluate multicultural texts/resources for use in our classrooms, and develop lesson plans and activities using high quality examples of multicultural literature. To address the needs and interests of students at various stages of their career, this course incorporates a personalized learning component delivered via hybrid course format (four sessions face-to-face and remaining sessions online). Due to its flexibility, this course is open to practicing teachers, Master’s degree students, and undergraduate students.
This course takes place through a remote, hybrid format: all of the work is completed remotely, through a combination of synchronous class sessions and self-paced modules. Each week, students will complete assigned readings, explore different resources, and participate in online discussions and other activities. Across the semester, we will also have approximately 4 synchronous meetings, also conducted online. Students will complete weekly tasks while also working toward completion of longer-term assignments and projects.
Grades are based on class participation, completion of online modules, and several larger projects, including critical analysis of diverse texts, a lesson plan for teaching with diverse texts, and a research presentation on an individually-chosen topic.
