About CE 255 A

Theory of physical/chemical processes for treating waters and wastewaters; reactor dynamics, mass transfer, adsorption, ion exchange, precipitation; project-based. Prerequisite: CE 151.

Notes

Prereqs: CE 151, Design Elective (Civil); BioGeoChem Design Elective (Env); Elective (Civil, Env); Open to Degree and CDE students

Section Description

In this course, mass balances, aquatic chemistry, and chemical reactor analysis are applied to physical and chemical processes used for water and wastewater treatment. Students also learn the theory and practice of various unit processes including adsorption, coagulation & flocculation, filtration, chemical oxidation, disinfection, and membrane filtration. The goal is to provide a theoretical understanding of various chemical and physical unit operations used in water and wastewater treatment systems. Students will use the concepts learned in this class to better understand the design and operation of engineered systems.

Section Expectation

1. To apply fundamental knowledge about physical/chemical processes in water and wastewater treatment to interpret and solve water quality issues 2. To gain knowledge of contemporary water quality issues 3. To learn and apply mass balance and reaction kinetics concepts to evaluate reactor performance and predict changes in water quality 4. To be able to use the problem –solving techniques and skills developed in class in engineering practice 5. To analyze and interpret data obtained from textbook case studies to the design and operation evaluation of water and wastewater unit operations
