EDHI 362: College Students and Contexts explores the diversity of college students and higher education institutions. The course is organized around Astin’s (1993) Inputs-Environments-Outputs theoretical framework. For this course, inputs include student demographics, the college choice process, and enrollment. Transitions, college environments, and college student development create the focus for the study of environments. Finally, retention and persistence, student outcomes, and moving forward make up our examination of outputs. Course objectives and outcomes include the following: 1. Gain knowledge and understanding a. Describe the diversity of students attending two- and four-year institutions. b. Identify characteristics of learning environments that support student success. c. Explain various student outcomes that higher education institutions should demonstrate to various stakeholders. 2. Clarify values and beliefs a. Discuss current trends and assumptions about college students, environments, and outcomes. b. Examine individual contribution to higher education. 3. Develop skills a. Examine local/regional/national contexts for college students. b. Use data-driven evidence to tell compelling stories related to college students.
This course is mostly structured as a discussion-based learning environment. This course and classroom environment will rely on individual and collective responsibility in contributing to how learning occurs. Thus, engagement with course readings, assignments, and discussion is critical to your development and in how you will be assessed as a student. Students should expect to spend at least 6-8 hours a week on coursework outside of class.
Grades are based on attendance and participation, weekly reading journals, an opinion and commentary piece, an infographic assignment, as well as a open-topic term paper.
