The basis of inheritance, covering topics from classical genetics to modern molecular studies. Analysis of genetic data emphasized, from prokaryotic, animal, and plant systems. Prerequisites: [(BCOR 011 or BIOL 001) and (BCOR 012 or BIOL 002)], or BCOR 021; and also CHEM 031, or CHEM 035, or CHEM 051.
Prereqs enforced by the system: BIOL 01/02 or BCOR 11/12 or BCOR 21; and CHEM 31 or 35 or 51; Must register for a BCOR 101 discussion section; CDE students only even after level restrictions removed; Degree students register for BCOR 101 A
The goals of this course are to develop a deep understanding of the major concepts in genetics, learn how to apply these concepts to solve problems, and to develop a capacity to think critically about real-world issues related to genetics. The course covers topics from classical genetics to modern molecular studies. Analysis of genetic data is emphasized, from prokaryotic, animal, and plant systems.
This course will be taught remotely - students will attend all lectures via Microsoft Teams at the appointed class time. Weekly remote discussion sections involve group and individual work. Students should expect to spend 2-4 hours per week on coursework outside of class, with additional time for exam preparation.
Three midterm exams and one final exam, and recitation section assignments.
