Provides students a basic understanding of professional business communications. Prerequisite: Business Administration major; First-year/Sophomore standing.
BSAD majors only; Required course specific fee of $25; Open to Degree and CDE students.
This course will begin to develop the necessary written, visual and oral presentation skills for effective and efficient business communications. Students will practice producing reports, media, media writing, and many oral presentations. Organization, concision, and professional tone are emphasized. Basic skills (e.g., grammar, word usage) will be addressed as required. Students will complete the course with an improved ability to communicate ideas convincingly through a variety of assignments.
The day-to-day format of the course is more so that of a “flipped classroom” than of a traditional lecture. This means that you are responsible for all reading and materials in order to perform tasks to hone your communication skills in class. There may be days that we go over course readings in depth, while other days we will jump right into an activity. You are still responsible for the reading even when we do not explicitly review the content in class. At times, this course will be fast-paced. In order to accommodate for this, manage your time wisely. Put due dates in your calendar and plan your life around them. Time management skills are often the difference between success and failure. Accordingly, late assignments – including homework – will not be accepted except in cases of an emergency or with advance permission.
