Introduction to calculus of functions of one variable including: limits, continuity, techniques and applications of differentiation and integration. Prerequisites: MATH 010. Credit not given for more than one course in the pair MATH 019, MATH 021 unless followed by MATH 022 or MATH 023.
Prereqs enforced by the system: MATH 010; or MRT of at least 12; Laptops required for this section. Open to Degree and CDE students MWF classes meet in E210 North
Calculus I is an introduction to the calculus of functions of one variable. This will include an understanding of the concepts of limits, continuity, the definition of the derivative, and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus; techniques and applications of differentiation; basic integration, including integration by substitution; and applications of integration including area and volume. Topics will be presented with a level of depth and rigor appropriate for students pursuing degrees in technical fields such as mathematics, statistics, engineering, or the physical sciences. The computer algebra system Mathematica will be used throughout the course. A strong background in algebra and precalculus, including trigonometry, is a necessary pre-requisite for the course. Students with insufficient preparation in secondary school mathematics should take MATH 010 prior to enrolling in MATH 021.
Students should expect to spend 6-8 hours a week on coursework outside of class.
Grades will be based on WebAssign homework, Mathematica labs, quizzes, exams, and a cumulative final exam.
