Section Description

This course is designed to provide theoretical knowledge and practical skills in preparation for a national certification exam in group fitness instruction. Topics include guidelines for instructing safe, effective, and purposeful exercise, essentials of the instructor-participant relationship, the principles of motivation to encourage adherence in the group fitness setting, effective instructor-to participant communication techniques, methods for enhancing group leadership, and the group fitness instructor’s (GFI’s) professional role. Success in this course is dependent upon individual responsibility and initiative. You are expected to dress for activity and participate in labs. More than two (2) absences will affect the student’s final grade.

Section Expectation

The majority of the class content that is graded is performed in class during labs in Patrick 217. Students will need to come to class prepared for activity and for practical exercises where they will be planning class designs, teaching, and evaluating. There will be online powerpoint lectures that highlight the text we utilize for this course. We will use class time to underscore the key points in the online lectures and apply the concepts learned with hands-on activities. The online quizzes and final exam will relate to the online lecture materials and text. Students will be encouraged to register for the certification exam and self-pace their exam preparation. This is a preparation course for becoming a Group Fitness Instructor, not a certification. Students that choose to get certified will have to register with a respective governing body.
