Section Description

Acts of Resistance: The Work of Toni Morrison, Kara Walker, and Claudia Rankine. Rankine’s award winning 2014 collection Citizen is an extension of the dialogue that exists between the work of Toni Morrison and Kara Walker. Both Morrison and Walker exemplify the seminal Zora Neale Hurston quotation that delineates the framework of Rankine’s text – “I feel most colored when I am throw against a sharp white background” – whether seen in the interplay between black type on a white page or black silhouettes on a white wall, Morrison and Walker’s texts highlight the knowledge and experiences of what it means to be black in America.

Seminar with heavy emphasis on student-led discussion. Weekly responses and a final paper.
