Dates: June 24 - July 5, 2019; Monday through Friday June 24 - June 28, 2019 from 8:30-4:30 Location: ECHO Rubenstein Lab; Pre & Post work required. Title: CREST-Champlain Research Experience for Sec. Teachers Course enrollment is restricted to only those teachers participating in the CREST program.

Section Description

The CREST Program will engage grade 7-12 teachers in an exploration of Lake Champlain Basin research and ecology through authentic investigations alongside scientists, graduate students, teachers, and teacher educators. Additionally, participants will have opportunities to integrate project, proficiency, and place-based teaching practices as they develop a project based on the CREST touchstones to be implemented during the academic year. CREST program activities are aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards and the Common Core State Standards in ELA and Mathematics.

Section Expectation

Teachers will: 1. Learn about Lake Champlain Basin research and environmental issues through experiences at UVM’s Rubenstein Lab, ECHO Aquarium, Shelburne Pond, and aboard the Melosira Research Vessel. 2. Explore curriculum and teaching practices that incorporate the latest in STEM, literacy, and mathematical thinking practices as outlined in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in Mathematics and Literacy. 3. Examine methods of developmentally, culturally, and personally responsive teaching, with the goal of improving post-secondary access and success for all grade 7-12 students. 4. Engage in reflective practice as they consider and write about their learning experiences in the CREST journal. 5. Design a project, centered on the CREST touchstones, that will be implemented in the classroom during the academic year.

Evaluation

Percentages will be assigned as listed below only for those taking the course for credit. However, all are expected to complete the assignments. 1. Journals: Record and reflect upon your CREST experiences and activities utilizing the reflection prompts provided in the syllabus and during the daily activities. (25%) 2. Project: Teachers will develop a project (instructional sequence) that integrates and applies their knowledge and experiences from CREST to their curriculum and teaching. Guidelines will be provided at the beginning of the CREST Program, and a Project Planner will be distributed on the first day of the program. (50%) 3. Participation: Based on full participation in the program, including regular attendance and active participation in all CREST experiences (25%).
