In-depth study of over 100 major philosophical coaching considerations. Lectures by visiting coaches. Study in areas of need and interest. Prerequisite: Junior standing. Undergraduate only.

Section Description

The purpose of this course is to provide the opportunity to learn and reflect upon the necessary skills to be a successful coach. The course will cover numerous topics but will focus on seven main sub-sections designed to allow the student the opportunity to learn, evaluate and self-reflect on their abilities and skills as a coach. Specifically the course objectives are as follows: 1. To develop and understand your own coaching philosophy. 2. Understand and appreciate the skills required to be a successful coach. 3. Understand athlete behavior and develop appropriate communication skills. 4. Understand teaching skills and the difference between tactical and technical skills. 5. Understand the skills you need and the skills your athletes need in order to be successful. 6. Understand the physical demands of your sport and appropriate conditioning approaches. 7. Develop an appropriate understanding of the challenges of coaching including parents, rules, liabilities etc.

Section Expectation

It is expected that the student read all class materials, and watch all section videos and then reflect appropriately on how this information shapes their coaching philosophy.
