Legal issues in mass media, including: freedom of speech, libel, invasion of privacy, obscenity and indecency, copyright and trademark. Prerequisite: CDAE 024.

In this course, we’ll study U.S. media law: First Amendment freedoms, libel, invasion of privacy, copyright, broadcast and advertising regulation, access to government records and meetings, as well as your rights and limitations in the world of multimedia. You’ll learn from professionals and who deal daily with these issues as journalists, techies, lawyers, broadcasters, students and university officials.
Students will be expected to participate regularly in an online community via a Blackboard page and turn in weekly assignments, including papers.
Students will be evaluated on discussion board posts, weekly written assignments in which they apply case law and at least one paper.
