Supervised experience in counseling in a clinical mental health setting. This course is required for MH track and Dual option students. Prerequisites: EDCO 110, 350, 274, 363 (practicum), 375 (School and Mental Health tracks), 340 (School Counseling track) and 362 (Mental Health track).

Section Description

This course is designed to provide counseling interns with an opportunity to refine and expand their counseling skills by working with clients in a field setting and receiving individual and group supervision. The internship seminar is designed to complement the 900 hours of clinical counseling work conducted by Clinical Mental Health Track students or the 600 hours of school counseling internship conducted by School Counseling Track students in their internship sites. Specific requirements regarding direct service hours in internship and other internship-related policies and procedures are outlined in the Counseling Program Internship Handbook. The internship seminar is designed to meet the CACREP requirement of regularly providing an average of 1 ½ hr/wk of group supervision to internship students.

Section Expectation

This course is open to Graduate Counseling students in their third semester of an approved internship site.

Evaluation

An “S” or “U” will be issued as grades for internship. Grades are based on the following: • Attendance and participation in seminar and supervision. Students will be expected to arrive on time, participate in class discussions and offering feedback to peers, and students are expected to stay until the end of class. • Satisfactory completion of required assignments and internship paperwork, including the presentation of at least one formal case presentation and one case consultation. • Adequate skill and professional competency as documented in the Competency Checklist and Goal Setting form. • Recommendation of the site supervisor and instructor.
