Speech and language acquisition interpreted in light of current learning and cognitive theory, linguistic theory, and methods of linguistic analysis.
Dates: May 20 - July 12, 2019
Students will learn about the developmental progression from infancy through school years for phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, and the overall connections between developing cognition, communication and the whole child. Theoretical perspectives on communication development will be studied. The importance of family and other significant relationships relating to communication acquisition are emphasized. Children’s individual differences in acquiring communication, including cultural and linguistic aspects of first and second language acquisition and learning differences will be examined.
This course is offered as a lecture-based prerequisite for students applying to a graduate CSD program, and as a course within UVM’s Speech-Language Pathology Assistants program.
Weekly assignments, include online discussion with peers and instructor. There will be writing assignments as evaluation tools and possible quizzes.
